Notice of Temporary Storm Assessment
Dear Tanner Electric Cooperative Members,
As a member-owned cooperative, keeping you informed about the challenges and triumphs of our utility is a top priority. I want to share an update and be transparent regarding the significant impact this past storm season has had on our system and our cooperative's finances.
This year, our region experienced an exceptionally severe storm season. From heavy rains to high winds, our infrastructure was pushed to its limits across all three of Tanner’s service areas. During the worst of these events (March 11 through March 15), our dedicated local employees worked tirelessly, but the sheer scale of the damage required extra hands.
We are incredibly grateful for the principle of cooperation among cooperatives. Thanks to mutual aid, neighboring electric cooperatives and dedicated contractors quickly stepped up to help us restore power safely and efficiently across all our communities.
While we are proud of our collective emergency response, the financial reality of these multiple storms was substantial. Tanner Electric Cooperative received no financial assistance from FEMA for these events, and we are not expecting any federal disaster relief.
Historically, we have built strong financial reserves to weather normal winter storms, and we have been able to absorb the majority of these storm costs so far. However, our financial stability is being tested—especially as we look ahead to the uncertain weather the remainder of the year may bring.
To ensure we maintain the reliable service and financial health you expect from your utility, the Tanner Electric Cooperative Board of Directors carefully evaluated our options. At the May Board meeting, the Board approved a temporary, short-term storm assessment of $13.33 per meter.
Here are the details of this assessment:
Amount: $13.33 per meter, per month.
Duration: 5 months
Timeline: This will begin on your July bill and automatically conclude with your November 2026 bill.
We understand that any additional charge on your utility bill is unwelcome news, and this decision was not made lightly. This temporary assessment is a direct and necessary step to recover from this year's extreme weather and ensure our grid remains resilient for the future.
Thank you for your continued patience, understanding, and support throughout this challenging season. We are proud to serve you and keep the lights on in our communities.
Sincerely,
Steven Walter
